Hybrid Innovation in Meiji Japan

چکیده

Japan’s hybrid system during the Meiji era of technological modernization provides a useful laboratory for examining whether complementary mechanisms to patents induce innovation. Patents were introduced in 1885 and by 1911 1.2 million mostly non-pecuniary prizes were awarded at 8,503 competitions. Prizes increased patent outcomes by 35 percent, a conservative causal estimate based on the timing of patents and prizes and the boost to patents observed in prefectures adjacent to those with prizes, relative to control prefectures without prizes. However, linking competition expenditures with the market value of patents to determine cost-benefit reveals the financial cost of the inducement was high. JEL: O31, O33, 034, 038

Hiroshi Shimizu Intermediary Functions and the Market for Innovation in Meiji and Taish ō Japan

Japan experienced a transformational phase of technological development during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We argue that an important, but so far neglected, factor was a developing market for innovation and a patentattorney system that was conducive to rapid technical change. We support our hypothesis using patent data and we also present a detailed case study on Tomogorō...

Influences of reconstruction and attenuation correction in brain SPECT images obtained by the hybrid SPECT/CT device: evaluation with a 3‐dimensional brain phantom

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influences of reconstruction and attenuation correction on the differences in the radioactivity distributions in 123I brain SPECT obtained by the hybrid SPECT/CT device. Methods: We used the 3-dimensional (3D) brain phantom, which imitates the precise structure of gray mater, white matter and bone regions. It was filled with 123I solution (20...
